We have experienced stepping into the beauty of Amish country in Ohio and also in Indiana. On our way home from Chicago in August, we decided to spend a couple of days in the northern Indiana Amish area. We stayed in a motel called, "Der Ruhe Blatz," which means "The Resting Place," in the town of Shipshewana. After having spent a week in the hectic traffic of Chicago, we found this place and the surrounding communities a fantastic place to be.
One of the unique features of this area is the Quilt Gardens that blanket seven different communities with a tapestry of color. Each of these gardens, just like a fabric quilt, is created with skill, patience and teamwork.
Hundreds of people plant and take care of the gardens. I talked with the two young women who work in the above quilt garden throughout the summer--digging weeds and caring for the flowers. It's certainly not an easy job.
We decided to drive to several different communities to view some of these quilt gardens which join quilting, gardening and art into a one-of-a-kind event.
We were told that this is the only experience of its kind in the world!
The following photos will show typical Amish country scenes and inside a typical Amish home as well as more of the quilt gardens.
In the town of Shipshewana, the Riegsecker BLUE GATE RESTAURANT AND BAKERY is definitely the recommended place for traditional Amish cooking. The flowers outside the windows ant the horses and carriages nearby make this a scenic place as well.
